Why You’ll Love Homemade Pink Orange Donuts

Making donuts at home is a delightful way to spend time in the kitchen.

Quick prep: Just mix, fry, and ice—ready to enjoy in about an hour!

Minimal ingredients: Most ingredients are staples you probably have on hand.

Customizable: Go wild with the icing colors and sprinkles to match any occasion.

Fun to make: It’s a great way to get the whole family involved in cooking.

Ingredients & Substitutions

To make these homemade pink orange donuts, you'll need 3 yolks, 1-2 cups of any oil (for frying), 2 ½ cups of self-rising flour, 1 cup of milk, 1 tablespoon of olive oil, ½ cup of caster sugar, 1 tablespoon of dry yeast, and ½ cup of butter.

  • If you don’t have self-rising flour, you can make your own by combining all-purpose flour with baking powder (1 cup of flour + 1 ½ teaspoon baking powder).
  • You can use any neutral oil for frying, like canola or vegetable oil, but make sure it has a high smoke point.
  • For a dairy-free version, substitute the milk with almond milk and the butter with coconut oil.
  • You can swap the icing sugar for powdered sugar if you want a less sweet glaze.

How to make the best homemade pink orange donuts

In a small-medium bowl mix dry ingredients: flour, yeast, and sugar. Mix it with a spatula then add eggs. Continue mixing the dough, add milk and butter.

Try to form a rounded dough. Cover the mixture with a kitchen towel and put aside somewhere warm to rise for about 2 hours.

Roll each portion into a ball, flatten it into small discs, and place it onto parchment paper, sprinkle your surface with flour, and cut out rounds using a round cutter. To cut small holes use ¾ inch cutter.

Preheat a dish filled with vegetable oil or a deep fat fryer and carefully place each donut, cook 1-2 at a time for about 2 minutes then flip on the other side. Place on a plate and leave to cool.

Expert Tips

Let the dough rise in a warm place: Make sure to cover the bowl with a kitchen towel and place it in a warm spot to help the dough rise beautifully. If your kitchen is chilly, consider turning on the oven for a few minutes to warm it up slightly before turning it off and placing the dough inside.

Don’t overcrowd the fryer: Fry only one or two donuts at a time to maintain the oil temperature. If you add too many, the temperature will drop, resulting in greasy donuts.

Test the oil: Before frying all the donuts, test the oil by dropping in a small piece of dough. If it sizzles and floats to the top, the oil is ready. If it sinks, wait a bit longer.

Perfect the glaze: Mix the icing sugar and water until you reach your desired consistency. For a thicker glaze, add more icing sugar, and for a thinner glaze, add a bit more water.

Serving Suggestions

These homemade pink orange donuts are fantastic on their own, but if you’re looking to dress them up, try these ideas:

  • Add a dusting of powdered sugar: It gives a delightful sweetness without overpowering the flavor.
  • Serve with a side of fresh fruit: Brighten up your plate with some berries or slices of orange for a refreshing contrast.
  • Pair with a hot cup of coffee or tea: The warmth of your favorite brew complements the sweetness of the donuts perfectly.

Servings 6 donuts

Ingredients

  • 2½ cups self-rising flour
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • ½ cup caster sugar
  • 3 large egg yolks
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • ½ cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1-2 cups neutral oil (such as avocado or vegetable) for frying

Icing

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • orange, pink, and white sprinkles any brand

Instructions

  • In a medium bowl, combine the self-rising flour, active dry yeast, and caster sugar.
  • Add the egg yolks, milk, olive oil, and melted butter. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  • Knead the dough lightly until smooth, then cover the bowl with a kitchen towel and place it in a warm spot to rise for about 2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  • Lightly flour a work surface. Roll the dough out and cut rounds using a large round cutter. Use a ¾-inch cutter to cut holes in the center of each donut.
  • Heat the neutral oil in a deep pot or deep fryer to 350°F. Carefully fry 1–2 donuts at a time for about 2 minutes per side, or until golden brown. Transfer to a plate or wire rack to cool slightly.
  • To make the icing, whisk together the powdered sugar and water in a small bowl until smooth.
  • Spoon or drizzle the icing over each donut, then immediately decorate with the orange, pink, and white sprinkles. Serve fresh and enjoy!

Notes

  • Make sure the oil stays close to 350°F for evenly cooked donuts that are crisp outside and soft inside.
  • Avoid overcrowding the pot while frying, which can lower the oil temperature.
  • Donuts are best enjoyed the same day they are made.
  • Store leftover donuts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 day.
